History of Piedmont Triad International Airport

On December 6, 1919, Maynard Field, a forerunner of GSO and one of the South's earliest commercial airports, was officially opened just west of Greensboro, close to Oak Ridge.

Lt. Belvin Maynard, a young pilot from North Carolina, is remembered by the name Maynard Field. By 1922, Miller Field in Winston-Salem and Charles Field were competing with it to the west.

The Tri-City Airport Commission chose the 112-acre site close to the Friendship neighborhood as the site for Piedmont Triad International Airport in 1927.

The current location of Piedmont Triad International Airport was referred to as "the best landing field in the south." by racing pilot Captain Roscoe Turner.

Winston-Salem, which had previously declined to provide money for airport building and undone the Tri-City Airport Authority's cooperative effort.

Paul C. and Helen G. Lindley sold their Friendship property to Greensboro and Guilford County. And with 12,000 spectators present in May 1927, they gave it the name Lindley Field.

Charles Lindbergh stopped at Lindley Field on October 14, 1927, while celebrating the development of flight. Mail delivery started in 1928.
